Since the computer "clab1" has been replaced by "juline" (running on Windows XP), the scanner has been working without a hiccup.

PHASE TWO
Remove Windows 2000 and install Windows XP with SP2 on "clab1".
Install the following software also:
  - HP Precision Scan Pro
  - HP 4600 and 4100 drivers
  - Nero
  - SSH Secure Shell
  - Firefox
  - MS Office 2000
  - 7zip
  - Adobe Acrobat
  - Sophos
  - GhostScript and GhostView

PROBLEM:
Error: "Scanner Not Found" or "Sorry Scanner Could Not be Initialized"

SOLUTION:
replaced by another computer, see juline.
