Problem:
Sophos AutoUpdate startup blocked by Vista.

Resolution:
To allow the installation of Sophos version 6.0 to proceed properly, you need to disable Windows Vista's Internet Explorer Protected Mode by doing the following:

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Press the Alt key to open the menu bar
  3. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options
  4. Click the Security tab
  5. Click the Internet zone. Then, clear the Enable Protected Mode check box
  6. Click OK and close Internet Explorer
  7. Proceed with the Sophos installation

Sophos Anti-virus 6.x Installation Problem:
Sophos AutoUpdate Error. Error 3057. There was an unexpected error while attempting to create, repair or delete a user account.

Action:
Checked Event Viewer.

Product: Sophos AutoUpdate - Error 3058. There was an unexpected error while attempting to create, repair or delete a user account. Contact your support personnel. Description: Could not open registry key SOFTWARE\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Service. A Windows API call returned error 5.

Workaround:
Edit Registry and do the following:

  1. Make sure the registry keys HKLM\Software\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Service are there
  2. Edit permission on the registry key HKLM\Software\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Service, and add the Administrators group with full access
