Notes on 2006-12 Problems w backup

Dec 6

• previous nite's backup jobs failed
• a tape was "struck" in drive & would not unload.
• phoned StorageTek & was issued work order # 12060103,
• "john" (604-418-3021) responded. & recommended the manual ejection of the tape.
• this is accomplished by open drawer & reach way to the back of the L20 box to access the drive unit's eject button.
• john also recommended multiple cleaning passes of the unit
• loaded & ran (from the L20 console) cleaning tape 3 x.
• then netvault would not load tapes, claimed drive offline;
• John thought this to be a software problem.
• power cycled the L20 -- no help
• rebooted backup no help.

Later

• Contacted BakBone software & got another John (1-877-955-2663)
• removed library from "devices" page.
• Added library back in but could not get tape drive added under the library. error like device name in use ??

Dec 7

• Tried again to add library w drive. This time in the configure page selected NDMP config, & deselected Emulate NDMP device.
• Drive added....
• Thought that this would worked for the nite's backup job; expected a "struck" tape

Dec 8

• backup with excepion of physics worked ok. physics nv daemons were not running, rap said this is some known problem.
• manually ran some backup jobs to fill tape again expecting stuck tape problem. but library successfully changed tapes & jobs ran to completion.
• an excerpt of the message file for the tiome of the backup jobs
